The International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS) announces the appointment of Thomas R. Vetter, MD, MPH, as incoming Deputy Editor-in-Chief of its flagship journal Anesthesia & Analgesia (A&A).

September 21, 2015 04:50 PM

In his position as Deputy Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Vetter will work with incoming A&A Editor-in-Chief Jean-Francois Pittet and the Journal Editorial Board to carry out A&A's strategic mission and accomplish the tactical and operational goals of the Journal. He will serve as the EIC pro-tempore if the need arises.  Drs. Pittet and Vetter will assume their new positions on April 1, 2016.  Dr. Vetter currently serves on the A&A Editorial Board.

Alex Evers, MD, Chair of the IARS Board of Trustees says: "We are enthused that Dr. Vetter will be joining Dr. Pittet and Anesthesia & Analgesia as the Journal's Deputy Editor-in-Chief.  Dr. Vetter's skill set nicely complements Dr. Pittet's and brings additional strength to an already robust editorial board.  The IARS Board of Trustees is confident that the new editorial team will build upon Dr. Shafer’s legacy of creativity and innovation, as well as expanding our Journal into new areas and creating new opportunities for authors."

Dr. Vetter is the Maurice S. Albin Professor of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, and the Vice Chair and Director of the Division of Pain Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine.  His research interests include outcomes, comparative effectiveness, performance improvement, patient-reported health measures, healthcare economics, clinical epidemiology, and healthcare disparities, with an emphasis on population-level implementation studies.

Dr. Vetter will continue to be based in Birmingham, Alabama, and will work closely with the IARS staff in San Francisco, California.
