IARS Awards Recipients

Nearly $1 million in grants and awards were announced at the IARS 2012 Annual Meeting Opening Session, including the 2012 Frontiers in Anesthesia Research Award, the 2012 SmartTots Research Grants, and the 2011 Teaching Recognition Awards. The Frontiers Award becomes the largest single grant awarded in IARS history.

2012 IARS Frontiers in Anesthesia Research Award

Ansgar Brambrink, MD, PhD - $750,000 Grant

Institution: Oregon Health & Science University
Project: Long-Term Outcome of Single vs. Triple Anesthesia Exposure of Infant Monkeys

Dr. Brambrink proposes using their newly established infant non-human primate (NHP) model to simulate the human condition of general anesthesia in a highly controlled environment and, supported by a team of expert neuroscientists at the Oregon National Primate Research Center, will investigate long-term functional and morphologic consequences of single vs. triple anesthesia exposure of infant NHPs.

Robert Block, PhD - $100,000 Grant

Institution: University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa
Project: General Anesthesia During Human Infancy and Brain Development

Dr. Block aims to evaluate the hypothesis that exposure to general anesthesia and surgery during infancy affects brain and cognitive development as reflected in measures of brain tissue volume and composition and white matter integrity, memory-related regional brain activation, and cognitive test performance.

Caleb Ing, MD - $100,000 Grant

Institution: Columbia University Medical Center, New York, New York
Project: Anesthetic Exposure Duration and Effects on Cognitive and Language Ability

Dr. Ing and colleagues are working to determine the relationship between anesthetic exposure before the age of three and long-term neurocognitive decits using a battery of directly administered neuropsychological assessments. The results of this study will help determine the association between anesthetic exposure and long-term defecit. This will be a critical piece of information that will help parents and physicians weigh the risks and benefits of exposure to anesthesia by delaying certain types of elective surgery.

Larry Chu, MD, MS - Innovation in Education

Role: Associate Professor of Anesthesia

Using online technology and multimedia video content, Dr. Chu and colleagues create the START program, a 10-month curriculum that introduces interns to the foundational concepts and knowledge in anesthesia, while orienting them to the faculty and environment they would be joining at the start of their residency.

Ling Qun Hu, MD - Achievement in Education

Institution: Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois
Role: Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology

Dr. Hu founded No Pain Labor N' Delivery, an international medical education program targeting the Chinese obstetric community with the goal of establishing 10 medical training sites for obstetric anesthesia by 2018.
