Purpose of the $15,000 Teaching Recognition Award

The IARS is pleased to announce two Teaching Recognition Awards for 2008. The IARS Teaching Recognition Award for Achievement in Education is designed to recognize outstanding career contributions by senior faculty. The IARS Teaching Recognition Award for Innovation in Education is designed to recognize extraordinary educational programs devised by junior or middle level faculty.

The winner of each award will receive $15,000 ($5,000 to the recipient, $10,000 to the recipient's institution to be used for education in anesthesia); public recognition at the Annual Meeting Awards ceremony at the IARS 83rd Annual Meeting in San Diego, California in March 2009; round-trip coach airfare to San Diego, complimentary meeting registration and a per diem for two days. A free one-year IARS Membership will be provided to all residents in the award winner's department.

Important: Only one Teaching Recognition Award application will be considered from each academic department (see below).


Rules and Guidelines

  1. To qualify, applicants must be a member of the IARS.
  2. The applicant must stipulate whether he or she is applying for the Achievement in Education Award or Innovation in Education Award.
  3. Prior applicants may resubmit, but must stipulate which award they are applying for (see above).
  4. Only one application per academic department will be considered, regardless of category.
  5. The application must be sent to iarshq@iars.org (Subject line: IARS Teaching Application : Applicant's last name) by July 25, 2008 to be eligible for consideration.
  6. Applications for this Award must include:
    • A commitment that if chosen as one of the five finalists for the 2008 Award, the applicant will attend the IARS 83rd Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA, March 2009 (IARS will waive registration fee), and participate in the Teaching Award Panel held on the afternoon session following the Seldon Lecture.
    • Official four-page Teaching Portfolio
    • A Personal Statement that describes the applicant’s philosophy of teaching
    • No fewer and no more than five letters of recommendation from one of each of the following:
      • Applicant's Chairperson
      • Fellow
      • Resident (two letters may be provided by residents if no Fellow contact)
      • Medical Student
      • External referee (outside candidate's Department - same or different institution)

Each letter of recommendation must arrive in a sealed and signed envelope verifying confidentiality addressed to the following:

Respondent must seal the envelope and sign across the envelope flap.
Recommendations must arrive on or before deadline of June 6, 2008.
Applications that do not conform to the above rules will not be considered.
