Rules and Guidelines
1) The principal applicant must be a member of the IARS and an investigator with research experience but who has yet to establish a history of substantial funding, and has less than ten years after completion of clinical training or Ph.D. Prior recipients of an IARS Clinical Scholar Research Award are not eligible to apply. Exceptions to this rule are possible for individuals who have not previously received funding for clinical research.
2) Research must involve human subjects, in vivo or in vitro.
3) The awards will go to projects that are judged by peer review to have high scientific merit and high probability of success. Priority funding will be awarded to those proposals that are independent of other extra-mural grant support. Experienced investigators working in new areas will receive consideration.
4) Applicants must identify a senior mentor at their institution whose participation is important for the success of the study. The mentor's qualifications and support of the proposed research must be included in Appendix B.

If necessary, supplemental information should be provided on plain paper continuation sheets with heading and numbering identical to that on the Application.

11) All Award Applications (which may include renewal of a previously granted IARS award) will be reviewed and evaluated by the Board of Trustees of the IARS and Awards will be granted at the sole discretion of the IARS.
12) All current extra-mural funding of the applicant, mentor, and co-investigators must be listed. The project titles and any overlap to the proposed project must be disclosed as Appendix E. Award funds will normally be paid in two equal annual installments of $40,000 with the second payment made in January 2010 contingent upon receipt of a satisfactory Progress Report (see #14 below). Consideration will be given to requests for an unequal payment schedule.
14) The official progress/budget report cited in item 7 of the Award Application must be submitted by the Award recipient to the IARS Cleveland office by September 1, 2009 and the final report within six months after the project completion date shown in item 11 of the Award Application.
